joy begins

the cold October air greets me this morning

sends a chill right through me

i love this time of year

the brilliant colors

the woodsy smells of the outdoors

the pleasure of kicking leaves as i walk

joy is abundant

but if i turn my focus on to all that surrounds me which is dying

flowers fading

foliage decaying

that saps the joy right from this moment

*

Paul says in Philippians 4:4:

Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice!

*

some days it’s not easy to be joyful

days may stretch into months when

joy is hard to find

when its a struggle simply to smile

and tears are too close to the surface

*

how do you find joy when you don’t feel joyful?

the answer is this:

find one small thing

to be grateful for

just one small thing

then find another

and another

*

the act of gratitude is the key to being joyful

recognizing undeserved gifts from our loving God

and giving thanks for them

this is when we begin to feel joy

by turning eyes from myself

and the situation

instead focus eyes on the graces that fall from heaven

like leaves falling from trees

joy is rekindled

*

embrace this moment with open eyes

to recognize gifts

open hands to receive them

give thanks

find joy

*

-blessings,

i couldn’t just walk by this flowering crabapple

i had to be part of it

under its canopy of blossoms

it’s limbs stretched wide to shelter and embrace

Sun Seeker

I saw it this morning.

Caught a glimpse. Running room to room.

Stopping to bask.

Capturing it before it faded.

It was sun-cast shadows radiating through windows.

son seeker

*

It’s been a dismal week.

The rain is good but after several days without seeing the sun, my outlook can be a bit rain-filled.

*

Seeing the sunlight this morning reminds me of how constant God is in our lives. Just as the sun still shines even when cloud-covered, our loving father is always there even when life-covered.

Present in every moment.

*

Life ticks from minute to day to week, at times dreary and dismal.

He is there.

Shining in through windows of the soul though I may not always see.

But perhaps I’m not looking for him.

Bogged down with lists, the urgent, pushing off the important. Am I seeking evidence of his presence? Am I still? Still long enough to recognize and capture moments of blessings?

*

His word speaks through David:

Surely you have granted him unending blessings
and made him glad with the joy of your presence. – Psalm 21:6

*

Lord,  thank you for unending blessings. Help me be a son seeker.

i finally heard him this afternoon

my first robin of the season

i heard him before i saw him – he sounded so close

*

robins aren’t really known as great songbirds, but there is something comforting about hearing them in early spring

this robin, however, didn’t sound real happy

he sounded upset

then i spotted him in the mountain ash

right above the bird bath that was full of last fall’s leaves

i could tell he was scolding me to get that bird bath cleaned up and ready for him

*

it got me thinking

what song is my heart singing today?

am i  singing a song of impatience and complaints like that robin?

it’s easy to find things to complain about

here’s the challenge: for everything that goes wrong, look for the blessing

it may be hidden, but it’s there

*

kind of like this Hellebore (Lenten Rose)

i was pretty sure it would be there since it’s one of the first flowers to bloom in spring

so i went searching for it

and there it was – buried beneath the leaves

and what a joyful discovery it was!

*

the more we look for blessings, the easier they are to find

it’s a matter of changing the way we  see things

*

i’m praying that your heart is full of  thanksgiving for the many blessings you have been given

and that it’s bubbling over into a melody of joy

*

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. ” Psalm 40:3

blessings cont.

21. an afternoon spent in the garden

22. songbirds

23. my grandmother’s birdbath

24. hunting for surprises in the garden
